Caring for You

We understand how difficult it can be to care for someone you love. At times it can be overwhelming:

Pay extra attention if:

  • Your energy levels have decreased notably. Even with regular breaks and a night of rest, you are frequently physically exhausted.
  • You are getting sick frequently.
  • You find it hard to relax, even when help is offered.
  • You feel mentally exhausted, overwhelmed and hopeless and neglect your own needs, health and wellbeing.
  • You have lost interest in activities you previously enjoyed and withdraw from friends and family.
  • You no longer find satisfaction in caregiving and find yourself to be increasingly impatient and irritable with the person you care for.

Fortunately, there are many options for those who need assistance to remain safely in their home.

Try these things to help yourself:

  • When someone offers help, accept it.
  • Know your limits. When you need a break, ask someone to step in. You'll be surprised at how willing people really are to lend a hand.
  • When feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, talk to a family member, a friend, or a therapist.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for what you want or need.
  • Be sure to take time for yourself. Go for a walk, to movies or a concert, have a dinner with friends, read a book, or get a massage. Be sure not to forget about those "little" things, like eating, sleeping, and laughing!
  • Be good to your back. If you aren't physically strong enough to lift your patient or even the groceries, try asking a neighbor or a friend for help. In emergencies, call the police or fire department for help.
  • Don't ignore your physical ailments hoping that they'll go away. Stop diagnosing your aches and pains and see a healthcare professional.

Besides hiring a caregiver there are many options including:

  • Community programs that offer financial and emotional support for those caring for loved ones.
  • Adult daycare services in your community.
  • Local Hospices for help when your loved one is at the end of life. It is very comforting to put some of your concerns in their capable hands and compassionate care.
