There are many things you need to consider when choosing a home care provider. You will want to look at the quality and availability of caregiving staff, the types of care offered, availability of the management and office staff, cost of care and payment policies.
You will want to know if the caregivers are insured with liability and worker's compensation. You will want to know if the agency conducts background checks, and you want to know if the agency will allow you to interview a few caregivers to make sure you get the right fit.
Here are some questions to ask and observations to make as you interview potential caregivers:
- Has the caregiver cared for older adults (or children) before?
- Tell me about what sort of clients you've had in the past.
- Does the caregiver make eye contact?
- Does she address you and/or your loved one?
- Is she warm, smiling, well-groomed?
- What other skills can you bring to the home?
- What about this type of work do you enjoy?
- Ask what questions she has of you regarding the care needed.
- And don't forget Chemistry! Do you feel confident that this would be a good fit?
